At the invitation of Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Prof Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Director of the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), participated as a speaker at the “Red Salon” in Münster on 14 August 2022. The event focused on the “Zeitenwende”, a term coined by Chancellor Scholz, and its significance for international development cooperation.
Building on the work of IDOS’ various research programmes, Prof Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge reflected in an introductory lecture on how the “Zeitenwende” is to be understood against the background of a changing world order and what it means for dealing with global challenges such as climate change or a looming hunger and financial crisis. She emphasised that the “Zeitenwende” requires Germany and Europe to invest more in their own credibility and to clearly express the international solidarity that is called for.
In an exchange moderated by Christoph Strässer, former Human Rights Commissioner of the Federal Government, Minister Svenja Schulze and Prof Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge then discussed with the guests how to deal with and prevent current and future crises, the impact of the “Zeitenwende” on the Global South and the importance of a feminist foreign and development policy.
